Birch Mountains Wildland is located within the Birch Mountains in Alberta. It contains one of Canada's only free-roaming wood bison herds outside of Wood Buffalo National Park. The area has a very diverse ecosystem that supports lake trout, lake whitefish, cisco, Arctic grayling, walleye and yellow perch; osprey and bald eagles and many more. The rare, spore-bearing plant quillwort was discovered in the area in 2004.〔http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/487324/quillwort〕〔( Birch Mountains Wildland Provincial Park ). albertaparks.ca〕 The Wildland contains 357,066.96 acres. It is accessible only by fly-in during the summer, and by snowmobile during the winter.〔albertaparks.ca/birch-mountains.aspx〕 There are no developed camping facilities in the park, except for two commercial backcountry lodges: Namur Lake Lodge and Island Lake Lodge.
